Though not many people out there really know it exists, I've been hosting a photo gallery for some time. Aside from whatever random photos I've taken over the years, it's where I keep all the photos from my trips to Otakon. I've recently moved it from a folder in my personal webspace to its own subdomain at http://gallery.phoenixinquis.net/. Eventually I may see about linking it to the forum user table, but for now registrations are available by invitation only. And by invitation, I mean from myself personally ;p

Also, I'd like to congratulate our own kitchchaos on achieving his goal of travelling to Japan! He's in the air now to study abroad in the land of the rising sun. Once he's there, he's assured me there'll be plenty of pictures showing up in his corner of the gallery as he adventures in that great land.

The other virtual console

Now that I do pretty much all my work on my laptop nowadays, my PC is becoming more and more of a multimedia box. So much so lately that it's moved into my entertainment center. It's a new thing for me, and I sometimes fiddle with it as new ideas pop up. It's running OpenSuSE 10.2, sending my KDE session through my nvidia card to my tv, and I've got a wireless keyboard and a remote that came with the old ati tv wonder it replaced. It's also connected to a touchscreen monitor using the same cloned display as the tv. It's not glamorous, but it is serving a few uses well so far.

First up is the most obvious use: I'm a big fan of Freevo for flipping through all the movies and music I've accumulated (though for music I very much prefer Amarok). Eventually I may get a tv card in there for DVR purposes and the like. If Freevo were to add pointer device support (such that you could navigate it with a mouse, or in my case, a touchscreen) and either matched (or better yet, provided an interface to) Amarok for music browsing / playing, I'd be in heaven.

A healthy dose of emulators and usb controllers goes a long way to validating its new coexistence with my many game consoles. While I enjoy plugging in the old systems and blowing in carts for some old-school fun, it's nice to be lazy from time to time and just load the game up on the pc. Video filters and netplay availability make it even better.

The PC DDR clone Stepmania also gets a lot of use at my house (I've got over 1000 songs loaded in by now), and while it's still pretty unstable, Frets on Fire is a nice looking Guitar Hero game which, if you ask me, warrants a download just for the tutorial. It's got a good dose of original personality that makes it so much more than just a simple clone.

I'm sure I've got plenty left to learn setting up a living room pc, so I'm open to suggestions. Has anyone else here attempted a similar project?

Site upgraded to phpBB3 RC1

Tue Jun 05, 2007 5:02 pm [5 comments]
The site has been successfully upgraded from phpBB2 to phpBB3

The Kainen theme was modified to replace the default proSilver theme

The main portal page and links page were rewritten from scratch. I'm also building a calendar into the site. Until forum integration is complete for that, it will only be displaying birthdays.

While things should work fine, remember that this is not a final release of phpBB3 and therefore may still suffer some bugs. If you encounter a problem, post it here so that I can investigate it.

phpBB3 is a massive improvement over version 2. I expect to do great things with it. Most of all though, I'm glad to have you all back here using it :)

  • 1999
    Site opens on pi.net.tripod.com
  • 2001
After bouncing around a few free webhosts, the site moves to a paid host and gets its domain name, phoenixinquis.net
Forums are started in October using phpBB 1.4
  • 2002
In May, phpBB 2 comes out. The site is upgraded on June 4.
After some additional work, the various site sections are combined with the forum and the overall look and feel of the site is unified thanks to a fresh new layout, Istari by Anabel Martinez, aka Aelice.
  • 2003
An ad run on megatokyo elevates the forum from a small, quiet group of friends to a full, active board
Also, Istari gets two major upgrades, bringing mods and extra functionality with them
  • 2004
The site continues to boom for a while, though activity dwindles near the end of the year
There were a few hosting company moves this year, hopping through a few nasty ones and eventually landing on the host still used today.
  • 2005-2006
With a steady decline in time and energy to maintain and update the site, it slowly declines to it's current state of disuse.
phpBB2 being five years old now, it has become a huge target for spammers
  • 2007
    Revival

Now that I'm settled into a good job, I've got some good time to spare now. And phpBB 3 (Olympus) has reached Release Candidate 1. What better time to relaunch the community. A fresh start with fresh software and a strong drive to build a full and friendly community once more :)

As before, discussion is open to computer programming, videogame and anime related topics. As a 24 year old professional now, I'm looking forward to seeing what new directions this site can take. So, jump on in and enjoy yourself. It's all about passing on the knowledge ;D
